The family tree of Queen Elizabeth II links the house of Windsor to most of Europe's royal houses. She was born a princess but not an heir, became queen at 25, and reigned for 70 years. Elizabeth was born in London on 21 April 1926. Her father was the second son of George V, so she was not expected to become queen. That changed when her uncle Edward VIII abdicated in December 1936. Her father became George VI, and she became heir presumptive at the age of ten.

Prince Philip's side of the family tree
Prince Philip was born on Corfu on 10 June 1921, a prince of Greece and Denmark. His parents were Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. He took his mother's family name, anglicised as Mountbatten, when he became a British subject in 1947.
He married Princess Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947. He died on 9 April 2021, aged 99.

Andrew's titles
Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, the Queen's second son.

Note: In October 2025 Andrew gave up the use of his remaining royal titles, including Duke of York. On 30 October 2025 Buckingham Palace said the King had begun a formal process to remove his style, titles and honours. He would be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. He remains the Queen's son and appears in the family tree as such.

How the crown passed from the Queen
Elizabeth II died at Balmoral on 8 September 2022. Her eldest son became Charles III at that moment. The succession then runs through Charles's elder son, William, Prince of Wales. After him come William's three children, George, Charlotte and Louis. Prince Harry and his children follow.

The royal surname
The royal house has been called Windsor since 1917, and Elizabeth II confirmed in 1952 that it would stay Windsor. In 1960 she declared that descendants without royal titles would use the surname Mountbatten-Windsor. It joined her house name to Philip's family name.
